The profession of art therapy encompasses and merges the philosophy and practices of art and psychology into a clinical field of study.

The practice of art therapy requires graduate level training.  An individual may complete requirements for an MS or MA degree in Art Therapy from a college or university. Click here to see a list of Master's degree programs that are approved by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA).  An individual with a Master's degree in a mental health profession, such as psychology, social work, counseling or marriage and family therapy, can fulfill post-graduate education in art therapy offered at universities or institutes.  The Art Therapy Institute in Dallas, Texas, is a post-graduate distance learning institute for mental health professionals seeking the ATR designation.   Students in the United States or international students can receive continuing education credits for online course work, residential workshops, seminars and group supervision.   Graduates who complete post-training internship requirements are eligible to apply for the ATR designation granted by the ATCB.  For more information, click on The Art Therapy Institute, or contact the ATI Director below:

Graduate or post-graduate work in art therapy prepares a mental health professional to become a Registered Art Therapist (ATR.)  The ATR designation is granted by the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) after meeting specific course, practicum and internship requirements.  In addition, certain states (e.g. Texas) may offer licensing opportunities for art therapists.  After being granted the ATR designation, an art therapist may take an exam offered by the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB).  Those passing the exam shall be granted board certification (ATR-BC.)

The American Art Therapy Association (AATA) was established in 1969.  As a non-profit organization of over 4,000 members, AATA has established standards for art therapy education, ethics and practice.  AATA grants approval for educational programs and prepares students for practice as art therapists.
